My 25 years of palaeoart chronology...

Reconstructing Wufengella for Guo et et al (2022). From the Early Cambrian, Wufengella is evolutionarily important because it is close to the ancestry of Brachiozoa, Bryozoa, and Phoronida. It is from the Chiungchussu Formation, China.

He doesn't get nearly enough attention. At the very least he really makes you rethink cubism. And not to belabor the bio from last weekend but you can't get away from it. He was a Romanian Jew, pressed through Weimar and Paris, a labor activist, landed in London where he eventually died of a heart attack during a Luftwaffe bombing raid. I'm wary of the stereotype of the "tortured artist" making his suffering fuel great work. But he surely did.

A painting showing cubist influence but with a different approach: The canvas is divided into large squares first, and into them are painted geometrically reduced forms (more representative than most cubist work per se) and at the borders of the larger grid they are dysjunct, yet taken as a whole form one large tableau. In other works Arthur Segal kept the squares entirely separate as individual paintings instead. Finally around the border is a custom frame painted in the same style, using the same paints in chromatic piano-key-like strips.

In the fantasies of colonizing extraplanetary regions, there is a replay of the great urban utopias. In the plans for the establishment of planned communities, there is something of the dream of a modern society built from scratch on virgin land.

Based on these intuitions, I began associating views of urban blocks (in french suburbs) at the moment they emerge with Martian landscapes.

The paintings are designed as collages, seamlessly sutured without illusion, so that at first everything holds together, but in a second phase, the impression of coherence fades, instilling the effect of a glitch or a flawed conception.

The term, "white noise," just doesn't do it justice, the sound of water flowing gently through the landscape.

There are burbles and bubbles, splashes, and just that smooth, constant whisper of current, broken only by the singing of birds overhead.

It is a symphony, but a quiet one, a calming auditory sanctuary that welcomes us warmly within its soft embrace.
