Clem Burke, the drummer for Blondie, died today at age 70 from cancer. A statement signed by co-founders Debbie Harry and Chris Stein referred to Burke as "the heartbeat of Blondie." Burke drummed for Eurythmics, the Ramones, Bob Dylan, Iggy Pop, Slinky Vagabond and the Go-Go's in his decades-long career. He also had his own band, Chequered Past, with Sex Pistols guitarist Steve Jones, Blondie's Nigel Harrison, Tin Machine's Tony Fox Sales and singer/"MacGyver" actor Michael Des Barres. Here's @Variety's tribute to him.

Why didn't Michelle Trachtenberg make it into the In Memoriam section? @vanityfair's Anthony Breznican explains it thus:

"There's always an outcry over the In Memoriam segment at the Oscars. Fans always find someone who was left out, and this year the outcry is over Michelle Trachtenberg, star of Harriet the Spy (1996), Ice Princess (2005) and EuroTrip (2004), among other films.

"The producers of the Oscar telecast don't compile the list of people who are recognized. That job is done by a committee, in part to spare the producers from being lobbied by the representatives, families and fans of Hollywood figures who have passed.

"The In Memoriam portion of the show also typically has a cut-off that's roughly a month before the awards ceremony. Exceptions tend to be made when a major star, like Gene Hackman, dies in the interim.

"This committee will likely consider Trachtenberg for next year, although anyone's inclusion is never guaranteed."

Update: The deaths of Gene Hackman and Betsy Arakawa have been ruled “suspicious enough in nature to require a thorough search and investigation” after a search warrant of their Santa Fe home. The warrant "did not locate signs of a carbon monoxide leak or poisoning.” Here's more from NBC News.

Musical Interlude: Roberta Flack left us today, and will be sorely missed. So many of her songs seem like cliches now, like "Killing Me Softly" or "Tonight I Celebrate My Love". Here's a rare track, never released on CD or streaming, taken from a 1971 Independence Day celebration in Ghana that also included the Ike & Tina Turner and the Staples Singers. It's a gorgeous a cappella performance, and still relevant in this turbulent times.

Tuskegee Airman, retired Lt. Col. Harry Stewart Jr., has died at age 100. He had dreamed of flying since he was a child in New York, watching planes at LaGuardia airport. He went on to earn the Distinguished Flying Cross for downing three German aircraft during a dogfight in 1945, and was part of a team of four Tuskegee Airmen who won the U.S. Air Force Top Gun flying competition in 1949 — an achievement that would not be recognized until decades later. After leaving the military, Stewart hoped to become a commercial pilot, but was rejected because of his race. He told Michigan Public Radio in 2019 he had recently been moved to tears on a flight. “When I entered the plane, I looked into the cockpit there and there were two African American pilots. One was the co-pilot, and one was the pilot. But not only that, the thing that started bringing the tears to my eyes is that they were both female,” he said. Here's more from @AssociatedPress about his incredible life and accomplishments.

Lastly, British stage and screen actor Joan Plowright died today. Our @CultureDesk shared a video of her with old friends Judi Dench and the late Maggie Smith, (a clip from “Tea With the Dames”) talking about continuing to work. “My agent in America said to me when he knew I couldn't do very much because of the eyesight going,” Plowright says. “And he said well if you do want to come over again we look around for a nice little cameo that Judi Dench hasn't got her paws on."

Critics and film lovers are sharing stories about their interactions with the iconic David Lynch. Here's one from Consequence's Liz Shannon Miller, who got to ask him a question on the press tour for "Twin Peaks: The Return." "Throughout the whole panel, Lynch was entirely himself, as idiosyncratic and warm and open as you might expect (even when dismissing a question with just a few brief words). It was a remarkable experience, one that brought out his human side in unexpected ways, while confirming what a force he was," she writes.
