Following Val Kilmer’s death, I read that every geek should watch Real Genius, and that it is an underrated film. Having finally seen it now, to be honest, I think it is a dated, predictable, typical light-hearted 1980s goofball comedy that is too lengthy and at times boring. I watched #ValKilmer in the theaters when I saw #TopSecret! in 1984. I was a preteen and went with my grandmother...suffice to say, I didn't get it, but my grandmother hated it. I had yet to discover the #ZuckerAndAbrahams' over-the-top style of #TheKentuckyFriedMovie and #Airplane!, which I soon came to love. The dashing Kilmer also soon became a favorite via #RealGenius. What a tremendous talent. And what an underwater bar-fight scene! RIP Val.

Real Genius was one of those formative anarchistic experiences in my youth that should be required viewing for anyone going into STEM.
